Tea Party -the Day of, Where do I Start?

The best way to assure you enjoy your tea is to make yourself ready first

1st thing on today's list

I shower, do my hair and make up before I do anything else. I know that once I get into final preparation time will get away from me.

2nd

Next, I make sure the house is tea party ready and in top shape. This should already be done, but I check to make sure I haven't missed anything.

Check
Front entrance
Carpets (cats and dogs can shed overnight)
Furniture (cats and dogs can shed overnight)
Powder room (is everything in there that someone might need)
Have all decorating items been placed

If any of these things needs done, do it now. Remember to check it off the list when you are finished.

You may wonder why I do these things first. What if I was to be running late and need some last minute help. I would rather ask for help with the food than ask someone to run the vacuum. If we have followed our plan and checked off things on our list this won't happen. No worries, just extra caution.

3rd

Early in the day I take all things I've baked and frozen out of the freezer to thaw. The baked goods I'm making today need to be started now.

Note: I usually bake everything ahead. I may need to fill tarts or frost small cakes, but most baking is already done.

If I have not made my tea sandwich fillings the day before, I will start this now. As an example I sometimes make a sandwich of tea smoked chicken. I smoke the chicken the day before and have it all sliced thinly. I add a thin slice of apple or pear to this sandwich. I definitely want to do this the day of so the fruit will be as fresh as it can be.

Tip: Squeeze lemon juice on fruit that has been sliced to prevent browning.

4th

Now let's get out our tea party breads we've chosen and assemble our sandwiches. I will lay several slices of bread on a clean surface. Spread each slice with butter or a cream cheese filling to the very ends of the bread. Finish assembling the rest of the ingredients of the sandwiches. Top with another slice of buttered bread. Use a very sharp knife to cut off all crusts. Now choose your shape (rectangles, triangles or use cookie cutters to make other shapes) and finish cutting the sandwiches.

Arrange on a plate that fits your three tier server. Wrap well with plastic wrap until tea time when you will place it on the stand. Keep it cold in the refrigerator.

Note: Remember to clean up as you go along. Check these things off of today's list as they get done.

Tip: I really like to ask one of my guests to help me with these things. Most friends enjoy helping and I get to enjoy someone's company for a longer time. Two heads are better than one, so if I miss something my helper may rescue me. Trust me they will have some funny story to tell when they get home.

5th

Wash any fruit you'll be adding to the plates. Put all condiments like clotted cream, jam, sugar, lemon slices and milk in their special tea party dishes. Get your tea leaves measured out for you infusers.

6th

The food is coming along nicely now. Take a break from that and finish anything needing done in the tea room.

Finish table settings
Finish flowers
If you're sending your friends home with a favor or treat take care of that
Light any candles
Double check your tea party atmosphere

7th

Just before you expect your friends to arrive assemble the rest of the treats on the three tier server. Place them on the table.

8th

Pour fresh filtered water into your kettle to heat.

9th

When the guests have arrived brew the tea. Brewing times are important for different varieties of tea and herbal teas so wait until everyone is there.

I've checked everything off of today's list. It must be time to get out my best party manners and “take tea” and enjoy a fun tea party with friends.
