A Long Island Iced Tea recipe for tea people to try or not to try. It may be a surprise to know there is no tea of any kind in the Long Island Iced Tea recipe. No, it is not a real iced tea. This drink is better named Long Island Iced Tea Cocktail.

For those who would like a change of pace I've found some iced tea recipes for the long island iced tea cocktail. You will need to make a trip to a liquor store before you can start this recipe. You will also need some soda. Cola is what is called for and you may choose your favorite brand.

Here comes the recipe from the Food network

Long Island Iced Tea Cocktail

2 cups ice cubes
1 ounce vodka
1 ounce gin
1 ounce white rum
1 ounce white tequila
1/2 ounce Triple Sec
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/2 cup cola, or to taste
2 lemon wedges

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Pour the vodka, gin, rum, tequila, triple sec, and lemon juice into the shaker. Cover and shake vigorously to combine and chill. Pour the mixture, ice and all, into 2 glasses and top off with the cola. Garnish with lemon wedges. Serve.

Here's another Long Island Iced Tea recipe from Cooks.com

Long Island Iced Tea

1/2 C Tequila
1/2 C Gin
1/2 C Rum
1/2 C Triple Sec
32 oz Lemonade
32 oz Coke

Mix all of the above together and serve over ice. Makes 3 quarts.

Note: Adding the cola is what gives the appearance that it is an iced tea drink

I notice this one doesn't have Vodka, but they both sound potent to me.

Health benefit of tea

If you are drinking loose leaf tea for the health benefit of tea, this is not going to be a healthy beverage. That's not to say it wouldn't be refreshing , but remember drink responsibly and don't drink and drive.

Here's one that does contain tea, it's call a Long Island Iced Green Tea.

Long Island Iced Green Tea

Ice
2 ounces Green Tea Vodka, recipe follows
1/2-ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
1-ounce orange liqueur
1/4-ounce golden rum
2 to 3 teaspoons Sugar Syrup

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add Green Tea Vodka, lemon juice, orange liqueur, and Sugar Syrup. Cover and shake until mixed and chilled, about 30 seconds. Pour into a tall glass and garnish with mint leaves.

To make green tea vodka

Green Tea Vodka:
1 cup vodka
2 tablespoons loose gunpowder green tea

Mix the tea leaves into the vodka. Cover, shake, let this mixture steep for about 2 hours. Strain the Vodka into the cocktail shaker.

Sugar Syrup:
1 cup sugar
1 cup water

Put the sugar and water in a small pan. Cook over low heat, stir until the sugar is dissolved.
(store the sugar syrup in the refrigerator)

I must admit that I have not tried these drinks. I would probably try a spiked tea punch first. The reason for that decision, I like walking a straight line and not weaving my way around. Long Island Iced Tea would definitely not be for me, but others may find it refreshing.
