When most people in the Western world use the word tea, they are referring to the beverage brewed from black tea leaves. Over 90% of the tea consumed in the Western world is black. Animal studies, using black teas, have shown preventive benefits regarding cancers of the skin, lungs, mouth, stomach, esophagus, colon, pancreas, bladder, and prostate.

Several studies have suggested that drinking black tea daily can maintain higher bone mass density in women. A study conducted in several Mediterranean countries suggested a higher risk of hip fracture in those who drank little or no tea.
