Studies have shown that the green tea side effects have been linked to pregnancy risks. The caffeine, catechins, and tannic acids may have negative effects and cause defects or miscarriages. Although moderate consumption is said to be OK, a mother to be should consider avoiding drinking green tea during early pregnancy. It is important to take folic acid supplements while pregnant to encourage proper development of the baby. Drinking green tea interferes with the production of a hormone necessary for proper development of the baby. This can result in a baby born with defects such as spina bifida.Previous studies have shown that there was a very high incidence of babies born with neural tube births in mothers that drank green tea in their first trimester.

Green tea side effects may occur with some medical conditions and interact with some medications. The caffeine in green tea, as with other beverages that contain caffeine, may interfere with or affect some medications. These medications may be: adenosine, some antibiotics, sedatives, beta blockers, blood thinners, anti-psychotics, MAO inhibitors, some cough and cold medications and weight loss products.

Individuals with heart problems, kidney disease, liver disorders, diabetes high blood pressure, or suffer from an over active thyroid, anxiety disorder or take blood thinners should consult with a health care professional about their nutritional habits.
